Arsene Wenger has reiterated, for the umpteenth time, that the club doesn’t intend to sell Alexis Sanchez this summer despite his delicate contract situation.
Alexis looks set to run his contract down this season and leave on a free next term, something rather unusual for a player of his calibre.
However, it did happen in 2014 with Robert Lewandowski moving on a free to Bayern Munich from rivals Borussia Dortmund, and they still survived.
The Chilean has been locked in contract talks with the club for a while and with no progress being made, it seemed he’s made his mind up that his future lies away from the Emirates Stadium.
Having said that, Alexis hasn’t kicked up a fuss this summer and seems happy to help the club for one more season as we look to have a shot at the title and reclaim our Champions League place.
For Wenger, that choice was sensible: “For me, it looks logical.
“It looks unusual to the media sometimes that the clubs want the contracts to be respected.
“I am amazed that you are amazed because it looks normal.”
As much as Wenger attempts to disguise this situation as “normal”, it’s far from it. Our best player will potentially walk out of the club for free in less than 12 months, that shouldn’t happen.
It’s something we’ve witnessed consistently at the club over the past few years and one they’ve attempted to rectify by hiring contract expert Huss Fahmy.
