Arsene Wenger not accepting director of football talk…

Arsene Wenger halted talk of Arsenal appointing a director of football to work alongside the boss this summer as rumours continue to swirl about a rift at boardroom level.

After Ivan Gazidis’ “catalyst for change” comment at a supporter’s forum last month, there have been a number of reports linking us with a move for a director of football.

Former Gunner Marc Overmars confirmed that he’s on a shortlist to assume such a role at Arsenal, but Wenger banished talk of having to share the power at the club ahead of our clash at Southampton.

“I don’t know what director of football means,” Wenger replied when asked about our latest link for that role.

“I’m the manager of Arsenal football club and as long as I’m manager of Arsenal football club I will decide what happens on the technical front. That’s it.”

There we have it. Wenger has confirmed that he’s not prepared to even discuss change while he’s here, which may give the board the clear opportunity they’ve been waiting for.

It seems the board felt they could spin a new contract for Wenger by promising that he’d lead a revolution, but that was never likely.

Wenger has his way and in his mind, it’s ‘either you back me, or sack me’.
