Arsene Wenger has given the strongest hint yet that he’s on the lookout for a centre-forward to finally replace Olivier Giroud with the Frenchman failing to prove that he’s sufficient for us to challenge for the league.
Wenger has kept faith in Giroud over the past four seasons and the 29-year-old is yet to reach the 20-goal mark in a single Premier League campaign.
Given that Giroud was essentially signed to replace Robin Van Persie – who netted 37 times in all competitions in his last term for us – the former Montpellier man has basically failed.
“What has happened is in the last 10 years, strikers have become quicker and quicker,” Wenger said.
‘What happened then? The defence responded by creating defenders who are quicker and quicker.
“Now, to put strikers in (as a manager) who are slow, you have really a big problem.”
Giroud’s case is one which has frustrated Wenger’s doubters over the past few years and is used as another piece of evidence which suggests that the boss would rather persist with a problem than admit his error and make a change.
For a manager who’s prided himself on unearthing explosive forwards, it’s time he returned to his tested method.
