Arsene Wenger Comes Out Swinging: The Players Don’t Decide My Future, The Board Does

Arsene Wenger lays down law to the players…
Arsene Wenger was predictably on edge at the pre-match press conference ahead of our second-leg clash against Bayern Munich at the Emirates Stadium.
We’ve lost three of our last four league games, including heavy losses against Liverpool and Chelsea which has further thrown our season in turmoil.
Given that we’re also effectively out of the Champions League heading into this tie, Wenger is feeling the heat.
The Frenchman’s contract expires in June and there seems to be no word on whether or not he’ll extend his stay, but the boss is clear regarding who that decision rests.
Flanked by Per Mertesacker as he faced the press, Wenger blocked a question aimed at his skipper – something he very rarely does.
When the German was asked if the players are fully behind the manager, Wenger felt the need to speak up:
“Look I think honestly it’s not down to choose the manager, Wenger said.
“The players have to perform and the board chooses the manager. We are in the best football club in the world and we have to show pride and commitment to defend the pride of this club.
“It’s not about the politics, we’re not in a political club here, we are in performance. I have to perform and the players have to perform. I don’t know what the players are talking about in the dressing room, but I hope they spoke about the next game and the next performance.”
