Ahead of our trip to Manchester City on Sunday, Arsene Wenger was asked about the interesting final days of the window which included rumours surrounding Alexis Sanchez and Raheem Sterling.
Reports were rife that we made a cash-plus-player offer to Man City for Sterling which would’ve seen Alexis get his dream move and rejoin Pep Guardiola.
It was confirmed by the former Barcelona boss in September, a deal he personally objected to and a straight £60m deal was agreed before the move infamously broke down.
However, ahead of the first meeting between the sides this season, Wenger refused to be drawn on the issue.
“I don’t want to open any speculations on that before a game like that,” Wenger told reporters after our goalless draw against Red Star.
“I believe that the transfer window is closed at the moment so that is not really a subject that is very important.”
Sterling himself claimed last month that he wasn’t aware of a deal on the table from Arsenal and that he didn’t even consider a move away, which only highlights our reckless transfer strategy every summer.
Nevertheless, Sterling is one of the main threats we’ll have to contain if we’re to pull off an unexpected win against the Premier League leaders.
