Arsene Wenger took a swipe at the fans demanding change at Arsenal by stating that we currently live in a society where people are only satisfied by what’s new while they have extreme demands.
Wenger, the longest-serving manager currently in Europe’s top five leagues, is championing the idea of stability and wants his fans to kerb their expectations.
While other managers are set extreme targets by demanding owners and are hit with a P45 once they fall short, the Frenchman has enjoyed a privileged position at the club.
The Arsenal board have made it clear that he isn’t answerable to them, yet Wenger seems rather irritated by the fans who’ve voiced their displeasure.
“We live in a society of change, news, impatience, emotions and today people always want new faces,” Wenger said.
“People want to win, if you don’t win the championship, if you don’t win the FA Cup, if you don’t win the Champions League, you are absolutely disastrous.”
“It’s not just because you turn up that you win it.”
Wenger usually jumps to extremes when his back is against the wall and he’s being questioned, this interview certainly proves that.
To label Arsenal fans as “impatient” is arguably the worse insult you can hurl at us.
We did everything we were told to do. Be patient in the first few years of the move to the Emirates Stadium as we got through the poor commercial deals that were crucial for the move.
During those eight years, we didn’t witness a single trophy come in despite paying some of the highest season ticket prices around. We saw our best players depart and become successful.
Still, we remained loyal. We believed in the project.
And in 2013, we were told that we’d reached the promise land. The renewed commercial kit deals, almost £300m between them, would now propel us to compete with Europe’s best.
We’ve seen no such progression. And we’re now fobbed off as impatient, entitled fans who don’t know how good we’re getting it.
Wenger’s rhetoric will lead to a messy break-up.
