Olivier Giroud finally made history by becoming the 19th member of the illustrious ‘100 Club’ at Arsenal after netting from the spot against Bate Borisov in the Europa League.
The Frenchman led the line as we took the Belarusan side apart in an impressive attacking display with Theo Walcott grabbing an early brace before Rob Holding put us in a commanding position.
After being awarded a penalty early in the second half for what seemed an innocuous challenge on Shkodran Mustafi, Giroud tucked the penalty away to keep up a 100% record from the penalty spot during his Arsenal career.
It also allowed him to join an exclusive list of Arsenal centurions, and Wenger reinforced the fact that one has to be “special” to reach such a milestone.
“I am pleased for him because it’s a remarkable achievement. Oliver Giroud has a fantastic reputation that is well-deserved and we are all pleased for him inside the club that he has done that,” Wenger told Arsenal Player.
“I would like to take the opportunity to congratulate him on something special. We have all played football, but to score 100 goals you need to be a bit special.”
Theo Walcott is the only other current squad member to share such a privilege with Giroud, with the Frenchman achieving the feat in half the time.
It was reported at the time that Giroud arrived for a fee of £12million if that turns out to be factual, he’s been one hell of a signing.
Judging him on his failure to lead us to a title isn’t fair and clearly ignores his deficiencies; Giroud has done his job.
