Arsene Wenger launched a scathing attack on his detractor by claiming that he’ll “never forget” the distasteful nature of the criticism levelled at him this season.
Wenger had had an unprecedented number of fans call for him to leave, which was exacerbated by the fact that his contract expires at the end of the season.
While we started the season strongly, the all too familiar collapse in the second half of the campaign became a reality – without the salvaging of our sacred fourth place.
Finishing fifth, on the back of failing to win the league for 13 consecutive seasons hasn’t helped the boss, and he’s taken certain criticisms personally.
“The lack of respect from some has been a disgrace and I will never accept that,” Wenger told BBC Sport.
“I will never forget it. The behaviour of some people during the season, that is what hurts me most.”
It seems Wenger is directing his angst towards the fans, yet there may be a hint of disdain for how he’s been treated at boardroom level.
While the perception is that Wenger will decide his own future, it’s clear to see that’s not the case – especially after the board’s weirdly worded statement in March.
With such animosity running through his veins, has the damage already been done in terms of Wenger’s tenure at Arsenal?
