Arsene Wenger not surprised by Alexis’ brilliance…

Arsene Wenger praised Alexis Sanchez’s match-winning moment against Southampton as we finally ended our poor run at St Mary’s Stadium in the Premier League.

The Chilean inspired our fist win at the Saints’ stadium for 14 years and banished memories of some embarrassing results we’ve come back with from the south coast.

Given that we were thumped 4-0 during our last league visit, it seemed that the players were made well aware of the record before kick-off.

However, the game was very much in the balance until Alexis’ moment of magic, as we swivelled past two defenders to fire home and become our first player to reach 20 league goals since Robin van Persie.

“That’s Alexis, you know,” Wenger told the press after the game.

“He’s a player who never gives and is always tricky to stop. Once he has the ball in the box, he’s dangerous.”

Ironically, Alexis’ goal was excellent centre-forward play despite the fact that he’s recently occupied a more deeper role in a 3-4-3 system.

The 28-year-old was impressive when leading the line earlier on this season, though Wenger revealed that the switch in his role occurred because of his displeasure at playing in that position.

Having said that, Alexis is the kind of player who’ll score goals no matter his position.
