Reports claim Arsene Wenger could be shown the door if we fail to qualify for the Champions League…
Arsene Wenger is reportedly in a fight to prove his long-term worth to Arsenal’s hierarchy and will be going all out to win the Europa League as the pressure mounts, The Telegraph reports.
Wenger signed a new two-year extension last summer despite mass protests among the fanbase calling for him to walk away at the end of his contract.
The board refused to buckle under the pressure and Wenger stayed one, but it very much felt more like a convenient decision rather than one in the best interest of the football club.
However, since then, Ivan Gazidis has been moving to shape the future after Wenger by hiring senior officials such as Sven Mislintat and Raul Sanllehi.
We’re the last top European club that’s heavily reliant on our manager, with modern coaches more comfortable focusing on that happens on the training pitch and leaving off-field tasks to experts in that field.
Last season represented our first season outside the top four under Wenger which was made somewhat digestible by our FA Cup heroics.
Given that we’re a club heavily reliant on our own resources, we can’t afford back-t0-back seasons outside the top four and after Saturday’s defeat to Spurs, Wenger finds himself seven points off his minimal target.
It means that the Europa League now represents our best chance of getting back into the Champions League, though Wenger’s reputation in European competitions doesn’t provide us with much hope.
