Mikel Arteta accepts the expectancy…
Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta admits that his team cannot do anything about the expectation placed on them this season, and states that it’s the result of our performances on the pitch, he told Men in Blazers.
Speaking during the international break free off our 1-0 win against Manchester City, Arteta addressed a range of topics relating to his role.
When asked about the external narrative that anything other than 1st place will be considered as failure, Arteta brushed it off as raised expectations.
After spending almost an entire season leading the pack only to fall at the final hurdle, onlookers are now expecting Arsenal to go one further.
Arteta’s record summer spending spree has also enhanced the pressure, with many feeling he now has the squad at his disposal to topple Man City.
“We cannot change that,” the Spaniard said when asked about the ruthless expectations on his squad.
“When you build expectations and we have given people the right reasons to dream, that’s fine.
“For us, there is only one (aim), that is to be better today than we were yesterday and prepare the best possible way to win the next fixture. That’s it, we cannot look any further than that.
“But it’s great! They are with us on the journey and completely engaged with us – like we are with them – and together it’s going to be easier.”
This season, it seems as though Arteta is aiming to instil a sense of coldness in our play and curb the emotion which surrounds the club.
It seems as though the players suffered exhaustion towards the end of last season and much of that may have been mental with so much emotion and noise around each fixture.
We are currently joint-top of the Premier League table with many claiming we’re not firing on all cylinders as we were last season – that sounds like the plan!
