Former Arsenal defender Matthew Upson has backed Jamie Vardy’s decision to stay at Leicester City and claimed that forward may have been swayed by the Gunners’ style of football.

Vardy starred for Leicester City last season as they stormed to the title, though much of his game is based on attacking the space on the counter-attack.

Upson stated that while rejecting a team like Arsenal can be tough – something Upson couldn’t do he joined from Luton in 1997 – Vardy should be commended for staying loyal.

“He’s so comfortable there and he’s played some fabulous football in a team that really does cater to his strengths,” Upson told BBC Radio 5 Live.

While Vardy’s decision had been coming, you’d hope that the club already has contingency plans in full motion and are actively pursuing other players.
