BT Sport’s European football expert Andy Brassell believes that Arsenal will be unable to replace Arsene Wenger like-for-like, given how much authority the boss carries at the club.
It’s no secret that Wenger conducts all of the day-to-day tasks at the club on the football side, and isn’t very good at delegating roles to other members of staff.
Wenger is the last of his kind in that regard, with other clubs appointing directors of football to carry out tasks off the football pitch.
While many fans call for a number of different names to replace the Frenchman, Brassell warns that those managers work in completely different environments to the one currently in place at Arsenal.
Modern day managers prefer the title of ‘head coach’, meaning that their sole focus lies on the training pitch and getting the best out of the players they have.
The likes of Ivan Gazidis and Dick Law have been unofficially conducting the role of a sporting director in recent years, but we may well have to construct a whole new system above a potential new coach.
