Arsenal defender Calum Chambers is set to join Fulham on a season-long loan despite being one of our most impressive players during pre-season, the Daily Mail reports.

Chambers extended his contract during the summer and while renewing our existing squad isn’t necessarily a job conducted by Unai Emery, his statement following the announcement makes this decision more baffling.

Emery claimed that Chambers “will be part of my plans this season” when the 23-year-old extended his contract, but it seems as though the Spaniard feels he needs more first-team minutes.

This will represent Chambers’ 2nd season-long loan spell in the past three seasons and one wonders why both Arsene Wenger and now Emery felt he wasn’t ready to contribute to our season.

It means we’re left with a group consisting of Shkodran Mustafi, Sokratis, Rob Holding, Konstantinos Mavrapanos and the injured Laurent Koscielny.

That certainly isn’t the most illustrious group of centre-backs we’ve had at the club and one hopes Emery can conjure up a solid partnership between that group.
