Craig Burley Slams “Weak” UEFA For Failing To Punish Danny Welbeck

Craig Burley slams UEFA failing to be tough on Danny Welbeck…

ESPN’s Craig Burley branded UEFA as “weak” after they confirmed that they weren’t going to take retrospective action against Danny Welbeck for his “dive” against AC Milan.

Welbeck sent the football ‘purist’ into delirium after taking a tumble against the Italian giants to win us a penalty in a knockout tie we were already leading quite comfortably.

As one would expect when we’re involved, Welbeck was labelled almost every name under the sun and the hysteria may have led you to believe that he’d committed murder.

After the furore died down, UEFA made it clear that they wouldn’t intervene, a smart decision considering that it would’ve set a precedent they don’t necessarily want to continue.

For Burley, though, he’s not happy about the governing body’s decision.

“Why not?” Burley said when asked if UEFA should’ve gone the other way with their decision.

“What was it then (the dive), a gust of wind? I mean how weak are UEFA?

“You’re just opening a can of worms, aren’t you.”

Diving is wrong, but taking a selective anti-simulation stance wouldn’t be a clever idea. Punishing Welbeck would mean doing the same to a number of other players each week.
