Arsenal forward Danny Welbeck has made it clear that he’s waiting in the wings for a call-up to the first XI after netting a brace in our 3-1 win against Brentford in the Carabao Cup, Sky Sports reports
Welbeck headed home from Matteo Guendouzi’s cross after just five minutes to calm the team, and the 27-year-old swept in a wonderful counter-attacking move minutes before the interval.
Welbeck has been playing second-fiddle to the likes of Alexandre Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in the league this season as Unai Emery attempts to settle on a preferred system.
It means that the cup competition is where the former Man Utd man will get the chance to impress, and he’s certainly doing that.
Welbeck found the net against FC Vorskla last week and has now bagged a brace in the Carabao Cup, it may be safe to say that a league start could be looming.
“You have got to wait for your opportunity,” Welbeck said after the tight 3-1 win.
“A few of the lads had a bit more of a pre-season than me which made it a bit difficult, I came a back a bit later than the others.
“I got 90 minutes last week, 90 minutes today and I’m just going to build on it from there and keep improving.
“So I’m happy with the goals, it is more important that we went through to the next round and put in a good performance against a strong side.”
