Arsenal are close to signing Barcelona midfielder Denis Suarez on a loan deal after talks with the Spanish giants accelerated in the last few days, Goal.com reports.

The former Manchester City academy graduate has been linked with us extensively over the past few weeks and Unai Emery did little to quell the rumours.

Emery went as far as discussing Suarez’s best position and where he’d fit into our side given that he’s already coached the Spaniard during his Sevilla tenure.

The 24-year-old spent a season loan in Seville where he won the Europa League under Emery’s tutelage and our interest in him illustrates a telling pattern.

“He was playing in his career, and also with me, as a right or left winger,” Emery said after our win at Blackpool ( via ESPN).

This latest report follows news from Spain that we have tabled a bid to Ever Banega’s representatives ahead of a summer move, another player who enjoyed a successful spell with Emery.

It seems clear that our head coach is leaning towards requesting players he’s previously managed to join him at Arsenal, though it’s not yet clear as to where he sees them fitting in.

We started the season playing a 4-2-3-1 system and Emery stated that playing with a back four and three in the midfield was the only way to play if we adhere to our philosophy.

Since then, the former Paris Saint-Germain coach is wedded to the idea of a back three and has been deploying different variations of that system in recent weeks.

It’s yielded some positive results, namely, the 4-2 win against Spurs in December through our form has dropped since.

Perhaps the lack of direct wide-men has led to a shift in formation and Emery is waiting for reinforcements before returning to his previous idea.
