Per Mertesacker has a message for the haters…
Arsenal skipper Per Mertesacker silenced a lot of doubters following his sensational display in our FA Cup final win against Chelsea at Wembley on Saturday.
The German veteran, who played his first minutes of the season against Everton on the final day, was thrust into the starting lineup amid a defensive crisis on the eve of the final.
Laurent Koscielny was suspended for the final, while Kieran Gibbs, Gabriel and Shkodran Mustafi were ruled out with respective injuries.
It meant that Mertesacker started in the middle of a back three, and he certainly displayed qualities we’ve lacked at times this season.
Given his vast experience, the World Cup winner also guided Rob Holding through the game, as the pair attempted to keep Diego Costa’s influence to a minimum.
We all raised our eyebrows when the club announced that it intended to extend Mertesacker’s contract by another year in the midst of his knee injury, though that seems like a good idea now.
As he embraced Arsenal legend, Martin Keown, Mertesacker clearly had a message for his doubters.
