Emile Smith Rowe is out with a knee injury…

Emile Smith Rowe was ruled out for “weeks” by Mikel Arteta this week, though a report claims that his injury isn’t as serious as it sounds and he should be back in the near future, The Athletic’s David Ornstein reports.

Arteta is usually quite pessimistic when asked about the diagnosis of a player, with the Spaniard often referring to injuries that take weeks to heal as ‘long term’.

Smith Rowe was only just reaching his peak fitness after an injury-ravaged campaign last term, with the 23-year-old handed his first league start in our 5-0 win against Sheffield United.

It was expected that he would start in the Carabao Cup clash against West Ham United, but news broke just before kick-off that the England international didn’t travel with the squad due to a knee issue.

According to The Athletic, Smith Rowe’s injury is not ‘overly severe’ and was caused by impact to his knee rather than something more sinister.

It’s the first time the Hale End graduate has been out with such an issue, with his previous ailments stemming from soft tissue problems.

With just two years left on his deal come the end of the season, this certainly feels like a make-or-break campaign for Smith Rowe’s Arsenal career.
