Emmanuel Petit issues a warning to Carragher…

Former Arsenal midfielder Emmanuel Petit issued a warning to Jamie Carragher that the title race was far from over and accused the Liverpool legend of celebrating too early, he said on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football.

Petit was a guest on the show and was tasked to analyse Arsenal’s stuttering form after we dropped more unnecessary points against Aston Villa having led the game 2-0.

Carragher attempted to frame an argument that while Arsenal and Liverpool are on par in terms of their defensive solidity this season, the Reds are in a league of their own regarding the chances they consistently create.

The former Liverpool defender argued that if Arsenal don’t do something in January to make-up for that gap in potency, they can kiss goodbye to the title.

While those arguments have been echoed by Arsenal fans across the world, Petit wasn’t on board with such a simplistic conclusion and feels Mikel Arteta’s side has what it takes to go all the way.

“We had this discussion with Jamie and he said that with the strikers that Arsenal have they cannot win the Premier League and I disagree,” the former World Cup winner said.

“They are not far from Liverpool from scoring goals. They are almost the same in terms of defence, the difference is not that huge. It’s the points they drop when they are in control of games. Consistency in performances is the most important thing if you want to win the Premier League.

“Liverpool and other teams are dealing with so many competitions. Arsenal have so many injuries, they’re going to be back soon, they’re going to be fresh.

“They will only concentrate on the Champions League and the Premier League. They will make a turnover as well, there are so many reasons as well. I think you’re too confident Jamie,” Petit added.

One of the biggest intangibles going in Liverpool’s favour is the fixture list this season and how their fixtures against fellow top-six sides are spaced out.

It means that while they can drop points on occasion, it’s hard to see them going through a rough patch given the favourable run of games they play between each ‘Big Six’ clash.
