Former Arsenal man Charlie Nicholas believes that Arsene Wenger still doesn’t know his best XI this late into the season after our demoralising defeat to Tottenham Hotspur in the derby.

Billed as the game which would define a shift in power at the final north London derby at White Hart Lane, Spurs confirmed the reality that they will finish above us for the first time in Wenger’s tenure.

While we’ve sneaked in front of them but a few points over the past few years, we are currently 17 points behind our neighbours – a serious indictment of our season.

As a game against Wenger’s nemesis, Mourinho looms large, Nicholas feels we’re at a serious crossroads now with the Frenchman at the helm.

“He went for change to stabilise, and yet we get beat by our rivals,” Nicholas told Sky Sports.

“It just doesn’t look right.

“You go to a back-three and play Monreal who’s a left-back and can’t tackle, whereas young Holding comes in and does really, really well and he leaves him out.”

Away from the usual gripes many have with Wenger, it’s his decision-making surrounding team selection and substitutions which continue to worry me.

I’m not sure any fanbase around the world are as anxious as Arsenal fans are before the teams have been read out due to our fear of Wenger doing something silly.

Starting Olivier Giroud in this system clearly doesn’t work, especially against a defence like Spurs who squeeze up and attempt to suffocate the game in the middle.

Playing against the Frenchman was a delight for them, while the powerful and quick Danny Welbeck watched on from the bench.

Something has to change!
