Steve Nicol has some advice for Olivier Giroud…
ESPN expert Steve Nicol has called on Olivier Giroud to seek a move away from Arsenal following the arrival of his compatriot Alexandre Lacazette.
Giroud started the fewest games in the Premier League since his arrival in 2012, with the Frenchman only getting the nod from the start on 11 occasions.
Arsene Wenger has been determined to inject some pace in our forward line and has favoured Alexis Sanchez and Danny Welbeck to lead the line for the most important games of the season.
And, with the World Cup in Russia looming large, players across the globe are wary of garnering enough minutes to put themselves in the frame for their national sides.
Giroud is currently France’s first choice striker, but seeing Lacazette walk through the door for a club record fee will certainly have him questioning his future.
Nicol has advised the Frenchman to look for other options.
“If he stays at Arsenal, he’ll end up with splinters on his bottom, sitting on the bench,” he said on ESPN FC.
“Why does Olivier Giroud, after what happened last season, want to stay at Arsenal? How does he think he’s going to get a start at Arsenal? It’s not happening. It sounds like he’s happy to stay there and pick up the dough.
“If Arsenal are starting with Olivier Giroud next season, they’re not going anywhere. Let’s be honest, if Olivier Giroud wants to play, he has to move.”
Not only is Lacazette a top class striker, he’s also competing with Giroud for a starting spot in Didier Deschamp’s French side.
Along with Kylian Mbappé, it’s a three-way fight for the former Monaco manager’s favouritism and Giroud may feel he has to be the leading man at another club to achieve his goal.
