Steve Nicol believes Alexandre Lacazette isn’t to blame for his loss of form…
Former Liverpool midfielder Steve Nicol has continued his staunch defence of Arsenal striker Alexandre Lacazette after the Frenchman came under criticism for his unfortunate cameo against Spurs.
Lacazette was thrown on by Arsene Wenger to rescue the game at Wembley and the £52m man has two attempts at goal, neither of which trouble Hugo Lloris’ goal.
It was the latter chance that garnered the most attention, Lacazette was put through on goal by Alex Iwobi in the 93rd-minute and it seemed that his moment had arrived.
Nicol believes Lacazette’s confidence has been damaged by Arsene Wenger’s bipolar team selection, doubling-down on his statement that the former Lyon man is a superior marksman to Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
“I think he’s unlucky, and I think he’s been harshly treated,” Nicol said on ESPN FC.
“He’s spent his whole season, having no idea whether he’s playing, whether he’s not.
“You’re talking about a guy who mentally must be frazzled.
“I’ll tell you what though, at least he got himself in a position where he could score, a little bit more than Aubameyang did.”
Pitting two players who’re currently on our books is a speciality at Arsenal, and it seems Aubameyang vs Lacazette is the latest debate.
Understandably, it was inevitable. Breaking your transfer record for one top European striker six months after an identical outlay for a similar profile of player will lead to some interesting questions.
We needed a replacement for Alexis Sanchez, but the Chilean was a wide forward who guaranteed a considerable amount of goals, Aubameyang and Lacazette are central strikers.
