Nedum Onuoha believes Arsenal’s consistency makes them the frontrunners…
Ex-Manchester City defender Nedum Onuoha believes Arsenal are the favourites in the race for the top-four due to their consistency following Saturday’s 2-1 win against Brentford, he told ESPN FC.
Mikel Arteta has guided the team to within four points of the prized Champions League places, though we have three games in hand on Manchester United.
The win against Brentford saw us put together back-to-back league wins for the first time since December, with the team benefitting from a crucial winter break earlier this month.
We host top-four rivals Wolves on Thursday as we look to take another step to rejoin Europe’s premier club competition while sending a strong message to the rest of the chasing pack.
For Onuoha, Arsenal’s consistency will see them cross the finish line.
“I think they are favourites, essentially,” the former Man City defender said.
“They seem to be the side that’s the most consistent right now.
“You seem to get ‘Jekyll and Hyde’ with United, West Ham seem to be spluttering a little bit and Spurs – obviously, they won today – but after losing three games in a row you kind of wonder what’s going wrong there.
“For Arsenal, they’re quietly going about their business and they will believe that it’s in their hands.
“If they can win those games in hand they’ll be in fourth and then, who knows, they may be able to hold that position until the end of the season,” he added.
While much of the discourse regarding our achilles heel has been about our lack of options up-front, Saturday proved that our biggest obstacle is an external one.
We were denied two stonewall penalties, with VAR not even advising referee Jon Moss to have a second look at the monitor.
It allowed the scoreline to be much closer than what transpired on the pitch, while our rivals seem to be catching big breaks from the officials.
