BT Sport pundit Rio Ferdinand showed little sympathy for Alexandre Lacazette after the Frenchman came under intense scrutiny for missing a guilt-edged chance in the last second against Spurs.

The £52m man was brought in during the summer as our main centre-forward, but a considerable goal drought along with the departure of Alexis Sanchez meant Arsene Wenger dipped in the market to sign Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

Lacazette has been dropped to the bench ever since and after being presented with two good opportunities to show why he was regarded as one of Europe’s most lethal forwards, he couldn’t produce.

However, Ferdinand states that instead of feeling sorry for himself, the 26-year-old needs to puff his chest out and live up to his reputation.

“It’s down to Lacazatte to say ‘I’m here to fight, play me or Aubameyang … I’m worth my weight in gold’,” Ferdinand said on BT Sport.

“He scored goals in France, he’s a good finisher.

“I don’t who you are, what level you’re at if confidence goes out of your game you’re not the same player.”

Lacazette still has a major part to play for us this season given that Aubameyang is cup-tied for the Europa League, a competition that is looking like our only realistic avenue into the Champions League next season.

We’ve struggled to score goals this season, illustrated by the fact that none of our players have even reached double figures in all competitions.

It’s something we desperately need to solve if we’re to salvage anything this season.
