Owen Hargreaves thinks the Europa League should become a priority…
Former Manchester United midfielder Owen Hargreaves believes Arsenal should focus on going all the way in Europa League if we’re to qualify for the Champions League next season.
His former side Man United used that route last campaign to secure an automatic spot in the group stages of the competition, though their path to the final was rather favourable.
The Europa League is seen as a rather inferior competition, though the teams who’ve now descended from the Champions League are of the heavyweight calibre.
Atletico Madrid, Borussia Dortmund and Napoli are now competing in Europea’s second-tier tournament, and all three will be looking to achieve a similar target.
However, for Hargreaves, Arsenal are now the favourites alongside Diego Simeone’s men.
“They’ll be one of the favourites obviously,” he said on BT Sport.
“Along with Atletico Madrid, they’re the best teams in the competition.
“But I think Arsenal desperately need to take this competition seriously. They’re not going to win the Premier League that’s for sure. Top four is definitely not a guarantee.
“(They need to) find a way to this competition. Surely this must be a priority for Arsene Wenger to finish this season. This has to be their go to.”
Arsene Wenger has already said that the Europa League will only become a priority once we reach the quarter-finals and the Frenchman still believes that the Premier League is still the main competition.
Finishing in the top four is what where Wenger’s strengths lie, winning European competitions isn’t something he has experience in.
