Damien Comolli backs Wenger’s stance…

Former Spurs and Liverpool sporting director Damien Comolli gave his backing to Arsene Wenger after he staunchly stated that there wouldn’t be an appointment of a director of football while he’s in charge.

Talk has been rife in recent weeks that we’re looking to add a senior figure to help Wenger out with transfers and contract negotiations, but the Frenchman completely shut down those theories in Tuesday’s press conference.

Ivan Gazidis has been the one senior pushing the narrative for change, without directly calling for the removal of Arsene Wenger.

It had been hoped that Wenger would accept that his performances this season warrant a change in approach, but they’re not forthcoming.

“I totally agree with his comments,” Comolli said on the Football Today show.

“He should be left alone in terms of how he sees the structure of the football club. He’s been delivering for 21 years.”

It’s clear to see that Wenger has convinced a significant portion of the public that he remains more important than Arsenal Football Club.

That’s why those who dare to call out his obvious flaws are mocked. That’s why different sets of players are blamed for failing in the same manner when Wenger remains constant. It’s also why any mention of a potential successor leads to an excessive and harsh analysis on said manager’s career.

I hoped Wenger’s love for Arsenal would see him walk away when he realised he could no longer take us forward, but he’s intent on making this a messy break-up.
