Arsene Wenger was left speechless in his post-match interview after our 5-1 humiliation against Bayern Munich which leaves us on the brink in the Champions League.
Aiming to finally end out last-16 hoodoo, in which we’ve exited the Champions League for the past six seasons, we have been dealt a huge blow.
When Bayern Munich came out of the draw, we were the side who’d play the second leg at home given that we won the group containing Paris Saint-Germain.
Having spent almost £100m last summer, boasting a squad filled with senior internationals and World Cup winners, it seemed this season would be different.
And it seemed that way too, 45 minutes into the tie we were level and had an away goal courtesy of Alexis Sanchez wizardry inside the penalty area.
What was to follow has left many fans asking the same question: ‘how?’
Our skipper Laurent Koscielny went off at half-time with an injury for Gabriel, and it seemed to all go pear-shaped from there. Bayern racked in another four goals.
For fans waiting for an apology or an explanation from Wenger, don’t hold your breath. He doesn’t have the answers.
“It’s difficult to explain,” he told BT Sport.
“I felt that just before half-time we played well. We were unlucky on the second goal.
“We lost Koscielny very quickly in the second half, he came off at 1-1. And suddenly it looked like we collapsed. It’s difficult mentally. [Bayern] were a better team than us as well. They played very well in the second half.”
