Arsene Wenger ridiculed UEFA current guidelines for what constitutes a penalty after FC Koln were given a soft spot-kick which eventually turned out to be a winner.
Mathieu Debuchy was adjudged to have felled Sehrou Guirassy who was bursting into the box, and the referee didn’t hesitate as he pointed to the spot.
Guirassy stepped up and slotted the ball home, and it became an uphill battle from then on despite dominating possession and being camped inside Koln’s half.
The boss seems to have had enough regarding the penalty decisions that have gone against us and called on FIFA to clarify the universal understanding of what requires a spot-kick.
“UEFA and FIFA they have to sort quickly out with a clear definition of what is a penalty and not a penalty,” Wenger told ITV Sport.
“The video (VAR) will not sort it out if they don’t do it.
“Because even then you’ll have five pundits who say it’s a penalty, and five who say it’s not a penalty. It can create even more confusion, the video.”
Wenger’s current angst comes after he called out Raheem Sterling for diving following the defeat at Manchester City earlier this month, with the boss claiming that the England man initiated contact before going down.
We conceded the second-highest penalties in the league last season behind relegated Hull City, a statistic that seems odd given the amount of possession we have during games.
Has Wenger got a point regarding his calls to UEFA and FIFA?
