Former Arsenal chairman Peter Hill-Wood has passed away at the age of 82, the club has sadly confirmed.
He was part of a distinct family lineage that played a major role in bringing Arsenal to where we are now, with both his father and grandfather serving as chairman.
Peter Hill-Wood joined the board in 1962 and has overseen a number of dramatical changes over the years.
From George Graham’s combative team in the late 80s and the early 90s to Arsene Wenger’s all-conquering ‘Invincible’ side in 2004, Hill-Wood saw it all.
Indeed, it was he and David Dein who made the bold attempt of hiring Wenger in 1996, who later became our most successful ever manager.
Not content with just being an elite, domestic club, Hill-Wood led the club into a new era as we made another brave decision to move stadiums.
As we’ve seen with rival clubs, the smoothness with which that change happened is not easy and everyone involved deserves a huge amount of credit.
Following a sudden, bad turn of health, he was forced to step down from his role as Chairman in 2013 and was replaced by Sir Chips Keswick.
A true Arsenal man, Peter Hill-Wood will be missed.
