John Hartson feels Wenger must target duo…

Former Arsenal striker John Hartson feels Arsene Wenger must make major moves in the transfer market if he’s to win back a fan base who’ve turned against him.

After winning his 7th FA Cup, Wenger’s future will be decided at an upcoming board meeting with majority Stan Kroenke in town for the final.

Despite finishing fifth, there remains the understanding that the board have no intention of ending Arsene Wenger’s 21-year reign.

While we’ve heard talk of this being a “mutual decision”, the final word essentially rests with Stan Kroenke who can’t seem to contemplate life after Wenger.

When the decision is finalised, Hartson feels like Wenger must immediately go into the market and spend big on players such as Romelu Lukaku and Virgil Van Dijk.

“I think they’ll be protests if he stays, I really do, I think a lot of the supporters want to see change at Arsenal,” Hartson said on BBC Radio 5 Live.

“What would appease the supporters is if he brought in some really big names.

“Say, for instance, Lukaku become available at Everton, £60million, whatever it is – Van Dijk for instance, £50m.

“Arsene, the fans are saying, ‘please can we be in for these players’.”

While the names mentioned may be slightly off, making a statement of intent has never been more important than this summer, regardless if he likes it or not.

I, though, won’t hold my breath. The club have made it clear on so many occasions that change isn’t required. Whether it be in personnel or approach.
