Gary Neville has called on Arsene Wenger to leave Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez out of the team if they’re incapable of fulfilling their defensive duties in this system.
Neville claimed that Wenger went for hard work over talent against Chelsea, with Alex Iwobi and Danny Welbeck occupying the two forward positions behind Alexandre Lacazette.
Our 3-4-3 system quickly became a 5-4-1 out of possession, with Iwobi and Welbeck tucking in to aid our midfield pair.
We were defensively sound throughout the game and could’ve nicked one at the other end with the likes of Welbeck, Lacazette and Aaron Ramsey missing chances.
“Arsene Wenger made a difference, he chose attitude and hard work over talent,” Neville said on Sky Sports.
“Iwobi and Welbeck did what Ozil and Sanchez didn’t do at Liverpool. They attached themselves to the two central midfielders.
“It’s not difficult and ultimately that video should go to Ozil and Sanchez because they do need to come back in, but if they are not going to do the job required, sit in the stands and let two players with less talent do the job you need to do in a big match.”
That is a big call from Neville, but one that needs a more in-depth discussion given that something has to change if we’re to enjoy better results away from home at top clubs.
You often hear players claim that the “little details” decide such games, and it’s those details that we often miss out on all too often.
We saw Welbeck and Iwobi shut down a number of spaces and Chelsea’s most dangerous passer in Cesc Fabregas rarely found the space to deliver the killer ball.
More of the same, please!
