Hector Bellerin feels the ratio of chances converted needs to improve…

Arsenal full-back Hector Bellerin called on his strikers to finish off their chances after we almost surrendered a narrow lead against relegation candidates Newcastle United.

Mesut Ozil’s sensational volley was enough to see off Rafael Benitez’s men, although we required some saves from Petr Cech in the final moments to save our blushes.

Many were predicting a comfortable win, a game in which we could boost our goal difference and confidence ahead of the big game on Friday against Liverpool.

It didn’t transpire, with the traditional moans and groans very audible inside the Emirates Stadium.

For Bellerin, he wants our forward line to be more ruthless in the future to prevent those nervy last few moments reoccurring.

“I think we made it hard on ourselves,” Bellerin told Arsenal Player.

“We had a few chances, especially in the first-half, we weren’t effective enough and towards the end of the second-half, we paid for it.

“They were very direct, they were getting the balls down and it was very hard for us to contrast that.

“We need to work more on finishing our play because we get loads of chances but we don’t score enough goals.”

Scoring goals has been a problem this season, with Alexandre Lacazette our leading goalscorer with just eight goals. At this stage last season, Alexis Sanchez had already scored 15 goals in all competitions.

Despite Bellerin’s comments above, we don’t necessarily create many clear-cut chances during home games as we’ve been accustomed to in the past, and that could be partially blamed on the Spaniard.

Full-backs are a crucial part of our game and Bellerin may have the worst final delivery of any right-back we’ve had in recent memory.

Bellerin needs to take heed of his own advice.
