Unai Emery looked stunned when a reporter asked him if he had any intention of selling Matteo Guendouzi who continues to impress the Spaniard.

Speaking to reporters after our 3-0 win against BATE Borisov which sees us through to the Europa League last-16, Emery reserved special praise for the 19-year-old.

Signed for just £8million from Ligue 2 side Lorient, many imagined that the Frenchman would be a long-term option who we’d rarely see this campaign.

He proved everyone wrong almost immediately and announced himself quickly as a valuable member of the first-team, and Emery wants him to continue to play with consistency.

“His development is like we want, he has big ambition and big quality and sometimes we need more quality with him and sometimes we need to be stronger in midfield with different matches, it depends,” Emery said.

“His development with us is very important and he is playing with consistency and I think he is improving. His quality of his football is very important for us and for me.”

The boss was then asked about recent reports linking Guendouzi with a move to Paris Saint-Germain and if he’d consider selling him, and Emery was surprised by the revelation.

“That’s a surprise. I don’t want this,” Guendouzi said.
