Ian Wright launched a stunning tirade on the club’s hierarchy after he was asked how Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil were allowed to run their contracts down while appearing on Sky Sports’ debate show.
Both Ozil and Alexis are months away from being able to walk away from the club on a free, a scenario nobody could’ve foreseen when both players joined under the glaze of a new dawn for the club.
After losing a number of key stars, we made a statement of intent by spending over £7omillion on the aforementioned duo in consecutive summers, and it seemed like joy would follow.
Despite a couple of FA Cups and some wonderful individual moments, Alexis and Ozil look set to depart without even a sustained title challenge under their belts.
They’re both still on the contracts they signed when they arrived in 2013 and 2014 respectively, something which seems rather baffling to Wrighty.
“It is terrible business for Arsenal, for a club that is accused of being a business to allow two players like that to run their contracts down,” our former record-goalscorer said on Sky Sports.
“Sanchez on top form is easily a £100m player. Ozil on top form is worth £70m to £80m. Arsenal are letting that go. It is disgusting business on the management side for Arsenal.
“How are you going to sell players like that in January for £25m? It is like people are laughing at you. Manchester City could find £25m in the car seat or something.”
Wright seems visibly annoyed at the situation as many Arsenal fans are, with the lack of accountability among the top brass even more infuriating.
When one sees players such as Phillipe Coutinho commanding a transfer fee north of £100million due to the number of years left on his contract, it defies belief how we’ve allowed this to take place.
