Ian Wright: We’d Get Embarrassed In The Champions League

Ian Wright wonders how this squad would fare if we sneaked it into next season’s Champions League…

Arsenal legend Ian Wright questioned if qualifying for next season’s Champions League would even be a worthwhile experience given the squad’s serious deficiencies.

After losing our third Premier League game in a week, our top-four hopes are hanging by a thread as we trail Chelsea by two points with two games remaining.

All three teams chasing that final spot have been in poor form of late, but our inability to win a game away seems to have cost us Champions League football.

We failed to put in a performance at Everton, Wolves and Leicester City – teams who’re all safe in their league positions and didn’t have much to play for.

It has led Wrighty to ask all sorts of questions, one of them being if this squad can even compete at the top table of European football.

“I want to make sure that this manager is given time to make that team right,” the former Arsenal striker said on his YouTube channel.

“In the summer he’ll need to make some serious additions.

“But right now, mainly through the fault of other teams, we’re unexpectedly in a position where we could actually qualify for the Champions League.

“But then I start to think to myself ‘how much do I really even want us to be in it?’

“With the way the team’s playing at the moment and the lack of money he’s going to have to spend…It’s worrying how embarrassing it could become if we get there and we keep playing the way we are,” added.

One would imagine that qualifying for the Champions League would see our transfer budget increase, but we’ve never seen the type of splash required every take place at the club.

We spent years qualifying comfortably under Arsene Wenger, but we often rested on our laurels and thought that keeping the squad together would somehow transfer the team’s fortunes.

Following a period of mass change in a short place of time, we still find ourselves in a similar place.
