Arsenal legend Ian Wright has reacted to the news that Stan Kroenke is set to own 100% of the club once his purchase of Alisher Usmanov’s shares goes through.

The American has made an offer of just over £550million to buy Usmanov’s 30% stake and it would now mean that Kroenke will become the sole owner, which has significant consequences.

He’s intending to end fan ownership by triggering the compulsory sale of all shares once he reaches the 97% threshold, an optional clause he’s decided to take.

It would end public scrutiny and accountability, and also put a stop to those AGM’s he hated attending.

Also, by taking the club private, we’ll no longer be able to publicly view the club’s accounts so if Kroenke wished to take dividends, there’s no way we’ll know.

For Ian Wright, this is a dark day for the club.

“Incredibly sad day for so many of our fan shareholders that no longer own a part of this club,” he wrote on Twitter.

“Imagine if this wasn’t only about money but about the club, the community & the fans – all this new enthusiasm we are witnessing with Unai wouldn’t feel like such a waste.”

It does feel like the mood has dampened around the club with a previous enthusiasm being born out of Unai Emery’s arrival and a clear change around the club.

Hopefully, the players can block this out and get off to a good start on Sunday.
