Jack Wilshere wants to do our talking on the pitch…

Arsenal playmaker Jack Wilshere responded to Troy Deeney’s claim that the Gunners players lack “cojones” by stating that people are entitled to an opinion, even if it’s fundamentally untrue.

After Saturday’s defeat at Watford, Deeney made his way to the BT Sport studios and unleashed a rather unusually brutally assessment of his fellow professional.

The Watford forward claimed that he could always sense fragility in our backline when he plays us, and makes it his business to apply physical pressure and see us wilt.

It was a rather opportunistic jibe given that he just led his side to victory, and Wilshere is adamant that a lack of character wasn’t the reason behind our capitulation at Vicarage Road.

“This is football, and the way football is, people talk,” Wilshere told BT Sport.

“He’s entitled to his opinion, but as a team, I don’t think you can ever question our character.

“We’ve been in worse positions before and bounced back so we need to do that, we need to concentrate on ourselves. If we look back on the game we made mistakes but I don’t think once we shied away from a tackle or a fight.”

Deeney’s comments prompted a number of different responses and professional opinion, but the most damning assessment is that he came out with such statements knowing a return to the Emirates Stadium awaits him.

I fail to envisage a striker claiming he physically got the better of the likes of Martin Keown and Sol Campbell knowing he had to visit Highbury and tussle with them again.

Whoever lines up against Deeney on his return to the Emirates later this season owes him a few knocks.
