Former Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere revealed that Gabriel Martinelli is the player who’s impressed him most in training in recent months, he told Arsenal Player.

Wilshere has been training with the first team since October as he looks to find a new club, and the 30-year-old was invited to travel with the squad for their warm-weather trip to Dubai.

Martinelli has exploded into life recently after being reintroduced into the team by Mikel Arteta after a frustrating period on the substitutes bench.

A perfect storm of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s exile coupled with Emile Smith Rowe’s injury problems allowed the Brazilian to re-enter the fray, and he has taken that opportunity with both hands.

The 20-year-old has scored four goals and bagged two assists in the Premier League this season, with his first goal coming at the end of November against Newcastle United.

“The one who I really like and think he’s going to be top is Martinelli,” Wilshere said when asked who’s impressed him.

“I think what the manager has done with him has been genius as well.

“When I first went there he was training, coming on, not playing much, but training really well and I was thinking, “He’s going to get a chance here” and he eventually got his chance and he’s been brilliant.

“He was the Player of the Month and he’s been brilliant and he trains like that every day as well,” the former England man added.

Barely out of his teens, Martinelli has levels to go. Arteta has made previous comments about the former Ituano starlet needing to settle on the ball and halt his frantic nature.

Now, efficiency in the final third is the next step in his development.
