Former Spurs midfielder Jermaine Jenas believes that we may have missed a trick last summer by not pursuing Southampton’s Virgil Van Dijk.
The Dutch defender is one of the most in-form players in the Premier League season and has formed a solid partnership alongside Jose Fonte.
Jenas believes that while we were chasing Shkodran Mustafi all summer, Van Dijk may have proven to be the better partner for Laurent Koscielny.
“I can’t believe Arsenal didn’t go and get him,” Jenas said on BBC Radio 5 Live.
“I think Van Dijk literally signed a contract going into the summer, which I was surprised that he signed.
“At the same time I couldn’t believe that out of all the clubs, Arsenal didn’t go: ‘you’re ours’,” Jenas concluded.
Given that Van Dijk signed a six-year deal before the summer, that should’ve given Jenas the indication that he wasn’t for sale and that the defender was happy to remain at St Mary’s.
Mustafi and Koscielny have formed a good partnership, but there may be a suspicion that the two are too similar and make rash decisions at the back.
