Andy Dunn feels this result has restored normal order…
The Sunday Mirror’s chief writer Andy Dunn claimed that in the space of 18 months, Jose Mourinho has reestablished Manchester United’s position above Arsenal as a club.
In the 2013/14 season, we finished above the Red Devils for the first time for just under a decade, and we’re yet to relinquish that superiority.
Man United have gone through a turbulent post-Sir Alex transition with the likes of David Moyes and Louis Van Gaal struggling to secure Champions League spots.
Mourinho’s first season didn’t change much in the league, though to cup wins and automatic qualification for the Champions League may have glossed over that.
However, following our defeat to 20-times champions on Saturday, the chairman of the Football Writers’ Association believes Man United are now ahead of Arsenal in the pecking order, despite the current campaign being far from over.
“I think the significance, overall, of the game, is that after 18 months, he’s (Mourinho) has now established Manchester United as a force stronger than Arsenal.
“There’s no getting away from that – in terms of where they are in the league and how they look as a team.
“You just wondered, for all of Arsenal’s dominance, what chance of Arsenal actually getting back above Manchester United.”
It’s an interesting statement to make, and one that surely admits that there has been a slight power shift in recent years, yet that was never echoed publicly.
Man Utd struggled to get into the Champions League while we maintained our status and added trophies to our cabinet.
However, having spent close to a £1bn since Fergie’s departure, one would imagine that they would reclaim their spot above us sooner rather later.
