Nwaneri makes immediate impact at U21 level…
England U21 boss Lee Carsley is pondering whether to select Ethan Nwaneri for this summer’s European Championships after the teenager made an immediate impact on his debut, The Standard reports.
Nwaneri found the net 10 minutes into his first appearance at U21 level, picking up the ball 20 yards from goal and picking out the far corner – a trademark finish for the Hale End star.
England’s young lions went on to win 4-2 against Portugal as they prepare to defend their crown this summer at the U21 Euros in Slovakia.
Emile Smith Rowe was a huge part of the squad that clinched the trophy in 2023, and Carsley is now contemplating Nwaneri’s involvement, given how seamlessly he adapted on Monday.
The starlet only turned 18 days ago and already looks like this level of football is too simple for him.
“He took his goal so well but we have to keep remembering he’s 18, unbelievable isn’t it?” The former Everton midfielder said.
“So we just have to encourage these guys, it’s important the rest of the team support him as well because I’m not sure it’s always going be as progressive as it is.
“But what an impression he has made. It’s important we look after him and make sure that, going to the tournament in the summer, is that the right thing.
“Well obviously we’ll work with Arsenal and make sure that we’re on the same page.”
Those conversations between England and Arsenal will be easier to have considering the relationship between Arteta and Carsley and their time at Everton together.
The U21 Euros isn’t a physically intense tournament and is completed within a fortnight, hence it wouldn’t hamper Nwaneri’s preparations for the new campaign.
It may suit him to play in a tournament filled with talented players across Europe, and if England were to successfully defend their crown, Nwaneri would be entering the season with a healthy boost.
