Lucas Torreira is finally an Arsenal player…

Lucas Torreira has finally been announced as an Arsenal player after the Uruguayan flew in from Russia for a medical on Sunday.

Reports were rife that a deal to bring the 22-year-old to north London was concluded for a fee in the region of £26.4m before the start of the World Cup, yet we were made to wait for some official confirmation.

Sampordia’s hierarchy were keen to stress that Torreira was no longer theirs, with the president and sporting director both talking up a move to Arsenal.

However, as ever with us, a medical hadn’t taken place yet and Arsenal only announced deals when all the I’s are dotted and the t’s are crossed.

Torreira has excelled as a holding midfielder for Sampdoria and despite his 5’6” frame, he proved at the World Cup that it certainly doesn’t hinder his ability to protect the back four.

“In Lucas Torreira, we have signed a young player who is a very bright talent in the game,” Unai Emery told Arsenal.com about the midfielder’s arrival.

“A midfielder with great quality, I have enjoyed watching his performances for Sampdoria in the past two seasons, and we all saw him do very well for Uruguay in the World Cup.

“He is a young player already with good experience, but who wants to keep on growing. We welcome Lucas to Arsenal and look forward to him joining us soon for pre-season.”

Torreira becomes our fourth summer signing and with the arrival of 19-year-old French midfielder Matteo Guendouzi reportedly imminent, you’d have to wonder if our summer business is now complete.
