Arsenal legend Martin Keown admitted that Arsene Wenger may have overstayed his welcome in north London and perhaps should’ve stepped down following our FA Cup wins a few years ago.

Speaking ahead of our first-leg clash against Atletico Madrid, Wenger was often told that leaving on a high would be a great ending after over two decades at the club.

The Frenchman had the chance to do that last season after our FA Cup win against Chelsea, especially given how our Premier League frailties exposed his lack of effectiveness as a manager.

However, Wenger instead chose to extend his contract by another two years and while he’s set to break a contract for the first time, Keown feels he missed an opportunity.

“It’s a case of understanding: ‘have you overstayed your welcome at the football club’?” Keown said about his former boss on BT Sport.

“People are now looking back at the Wenger years and wondering when the FA Cup after nine years without a trophy by beating Hull, was that the to go?

“Yh I think so,” Keown added when asked if Wenger had gone on too long.

Check out his thoughts in the video above.
