Martin Keown waxes lyrical of Jack Wilshere…

Arsenal legend Martin Keown waxed lyrical over Jack Wilshere’s classy display against Red Star Belgrade after the midfielder played a huge part in Olivier Giroud sensational winner.

Wilshere’s starts this season have come in the cup competitions and he’s done little to hinder his chances of being given a call-up for a Premier League start.

The 25-year-old dominated the game in Belarus against BATE Borisov, and he followed it up with a piece of artistry to open up a stubborn Red Star defence.

Wilshere weaved between three midfielders to start off the move which ended in Giroud acrobatic effort, and Keown believes much of the victory was down to such technique.

“It’s the brilliance of Jack Wilshere,” Keown said on BT Sport after the game.

“He punches a hole through the midfield which doesn’t exist – it’s what mere mortals could only dream of.”

Ironically, Giroud’s strike in Belgrade was the fourth anniversary of Wilshere’s sensational team goal against Norwich City, in which the aforementioned duo exchanged some crafty passes before finishing off the move.

Much of the criticism of the first-team has centred around our inability to produce the type of football we’re told we strive for under Arsene Wenger.

‘Wengerball’ has lost its pulse, though Wilshere has shown glimpses of giving it mouth-to-mouth.
