Arsenal legend Martin Keown has warned Arsene Wenger that he may have to accept the rumoured structural changes set to take place if he’s to stay on as manager.
Chief executive Ivan Gazidis alluded to such changes at a fan’s forum in April and while it remains unclear what those changes entail, it seems to include the hiring of some senior figures.
Wenger has remained the lone voice when it comes to all footballing decision, and he also made it clear that he’ll never work with a director of football.
While Wenger may have mistaken the intentions of the board, Keown still feels that he has little leverage given that the there are fans calling for his head.
“Ivan Gazidis has said that the recent poor performances, before this great run they’re on now, is a catalyst for change,” Keown told BBC Radio 5 Live.
“The structural changes are within the football club, and if the manager doesn’t want to accept that, he’ll go.”
Keown has very rarely spoken negatively on Wenger in public, despite the difficult position he’s left in when covering games in which our deficiencies are brutally exposed.
Wenger has made it clear that won’t work with a sporting director, so there already seems to be a clash in terms of how both parties see Arsenal moving forward.
What’s more worrying is how Gazidis and Wenger and voicing differing views in public, and not to each other in private.
One thing is for certain, change is needed at the football club.
