Zubimendi to Arsenal is still on…

The case of Martin Zubimendi is already developing into a saga months before the transfer window opens as his long-term future comes into sharp focus.

Reports in Spain emerged this week attempting to push a narrative that Real Madrid have stolen a march on Arsenal in their pursuit of the Real Sociedad star and that he was now likely headed to the Spanish capital.

Those reports contradicted the understanding among the top reporters in this country – mainly Sami Mokbel and David Ornstein – who’ve both previously claimed that Zubimendi to Arsenal was as good as done for the summer.

With Mikel Arteta preparing to lose two players he’s depended upon in the No.6 position in Jorginho and Thomas Partey, it made sense that he would seek a body in that role.

Despite the presence of Declan Rice and the needs of the squad higher up the pitch, it seems the club have greenlit the Spaniard’s plan to allocate resources to another holding midfielder.

According to David Ornstein, the move for Zubimendi hasn’t been derailed, and despite those reports from Spain, Arsenal still expect the 26-year-old to sign this summer.

“Without wanting to discredit the reporting of others, I personally haven’t heard this. Arsenal are expecting Zubimendi to join in the summer,” he said via The Athletic’s Q&A section.

Those comments were echoed by Sky Sports’ Darmesh Sheth, who stated that Zubimendi to Arsenal is ‘definitely going to happen’ this summer (via Sky Sports Transfer Talk).

The absence of a major international tournament this summer means the transfer window will explode into life soon after the campaign ends, and Zubimendi’s situation will certainly become clearer.
