“A Year Is A Long Time In Football” – Arteta Calm About His Arsenal Future

Arteta in no rush to discuss contract renewal…

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta isn’t in a rush to discuss a contract extension with his current deal set to expire in 2025 as the Spaniard attempts to end our Premier League drought.

Apart from one report emanating from Barcelona which Arteta vehemently denied, there haven’t been extensive rumours questioning the 42-year-old’s long-term future.

Although his deal has a little over 12 months left to run, Arteta has been instrumental in almost every aspect of the club and has convinced our best players to sign long-term contracts.

And, when the moment comes to announce those deals, Arteta is front and centre of the presentations – illustrating his position as the most important member of the club’s footballing department.

Arteta reiterated his happiness at the club and says for now, his focus is on winning games and lifting silverware at the end of the season.

“I am really happy, I still have a year in my contract, that’s a long time in football,” Arteta told the press ahead of our clash against Luton (via Goal.com).

“The players are happy, the club is happy, there are no issues. I’m just focusing on the games and winning football matches and those are the most important things right now.”

While I don’t doubt the club would be ready to present Arteta with a new contract at the drop of the hat, one can’t help shake off the feeling surrounding his last extension.

The Spaniard was rewarded with a new contract while we were in the midst of a top-four battle that we eventually lost out on.

The narrative at the time was that Arteta was handed a contract too early and while those sentiments have since been quashed – I suspect our former skipper took that personally.

I imagine he wants to sit down for renewal talks at the end of the campaign when he’s hopefully being rewarded for bringing major silverware back to the Emirates Stadium.
