Arteta examines the title race…
Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta is positioning his team to take advantage of any slip-up from league leaders Liverpool as we prepare for our trip to Brentford.
A win against Thomas Frank’s side will see us move into second-place and close the gap to six points at the halfway mark of this Premier League campaign.
Liverpool have been setting a relentless pace all season, losing only one game. If they continue their form, they will be on course to reach 95 points.
Arteta said that while the team would have to congratulate Arne Slot’s men if they continue winning throughout the campaign, the Spaniard suggests that history shows the Merseyside club will drop points from now until May.
With the two sides not set to meet until the final few weeks of the season, we’re reliant on other teams doing us a favour while we maintain our current form.
“That doesn’t depend on us, we have to continue to be like a hammer, be there every day, every day, every day,” the 42-year-old said in his pre-match press conference.
“If someone wins all the matches, congratulate them and let’s go to the next season but, if they don’t, which, in history, hasn’t happened, we’ll be there.”
With Bukayo Saka set for an extended period on the sidelines with a hamstring injury, our chances to win the league are likely linked to what we do in the January transfer window.
Saka was our chief creator in the final third, contributing to 15 goal involvements in 16 games this season. None of our current forwards have shown signs of replicating that form and banking on them to reach those levels would be negligent.
We’ve neglected the forward line in recruitment for several years, but with our current predicament, we have no choice but to act if we’re serious about competing for trophies.
