Merino is loving life at Arsenal…

Mike Merino has admitted that the summer months represented the best moments in his career as the midfielder secured a move to Arsenal weeks after lifting the European Championships with Spain, El Diario Vasco reports.

Merino finally made his Gunners debut last week during our Champions League win against Paris Saint-Germain after suffering a fracture in August minutes into his first training session.

Arteta revealed that an innocuous challenge between Gabriel and Merino left the former Real Sociedad in extreme pain, with a later scan revealing significant damage.

Given that the 28-year-old didn’t have a pre-season due to his protracted move to north London, he’s certainly behind the rest of his teammates in terms of match fitness.

Now, as he reunites with his Spanish comrades for the first time since that night in Berlin, Merino made his ambitions clear.

“This summer has been one of the best of my life,” the former Newcasle United man said.

“It is something you have to adapt to, because you are never used to these things happening to you in a short period of time.

“The ambition of all the club’s employees is incredible. In a couple of conversations with them you feel it and you can feel it.

“I am at a point in my career in which I am looking to grow and win titles. I hope I can help them win a Premier League and a Champions League.

While some fans have been vocal about their displeasure of Merino being called up to the Spain squad, it’s exactly what he needs at this stage of his rehabilitation.

Merino is fit but lacks match sharpness and that can only be gained by playing competitive minutes – something Spain are available to offer him this week.

With Rodri out for the season, it will be interesting to see where Merino is deployed.
